3/18/2019 0 Comments Digital Workflows in NumbersIn a November blog post, I shared about using the Numbers App to complete a creative storytelling project. We used a Numbers document for project management, brainstorming, curating resources, giving and getting peer feedback, and reflecting on our work. Having all of the pieces of my project in one place made it so much easier for me to understand the task and stay organized. Since then, Digital workflows in the Apple native app Numbers have been sweeping our district in math and science due to the program's many design options.

How do you see yourself using Numbers workflows in your classroom?

Last year during Alli Prior's An Apple a Week blog series, My colleague and friend Sam Neal shared how Apple's video editing tool Clips is so easy to use that our learners can focus on sharing what they know instead of how to use the tool. Read her full blog post below. This week my Quick Win is on the awesome features in the Clips app that allow learners to make and share videos with text, effects, graphics, and more. 11/1/2018 0 Comments Creative storytellingLast week I had the opportunity to spend two days with our district's AppleEDU representative and do training on their Elements of Learning and Everyone Can Create resources. Over the two days we used these resources and Apple apps to complete creative writing tasks. The best part was that we were able to share our writing in very creative ways! For our first task we were asked to write Six-Word Stories. We used a Numbers document for project management, brainstorming, curating resources, giving and getting peer feedback, and reflecting on our work. Having all of the pieces of my project in one place made it so much easier for me to understand the task and stay organized. On the second day we had to write and share a personal narrative with Keynote. We used the drawing and animation features within Keynote to make a line drawing illustration for our story. The maximum length for animations in Keynote are 60 seconds. The drawing and the one minute time limit really made me think about my story elements and the most important details of my story to include and still get my message across. While both of our tasks during training were based around creative writing, these workflows and tools can be used in any content area. I would love to partner with you to see how we can incorporate these create processes into your lessons!
Schoology, our district purchased learning management system, offers educators ways to foster student self-paced learning with student completion rules and help learners reflect on their learning to set obtainable goals by tracking mastery.
Student Completion Rules
You can use student completion rules to create self-paced learning for students while still keeping structure in the flow of your class. Check out this Quick Win for how to set up completion rules in your Schoology courses.
Click the button below to learn more about Student Completion Rules, how to individually assign or excuse materials with completion rules, or for generally troubleshooting tips. Student Mastery Reporting
Student Mastery Reporting allows educators to view student achievement on any standard or learning objective that has been aligned to Assignments, Test/Quiz questions, Assessment questions. or graded Discussions within a course.
Learners can also see their own objectives report. They can use this information to see where they have strengths and to set goals for areas that need growth. Click the buttons below to learn more about Student Mastery Reporting and learning objectives in Schoology.

Digital Citizenship week is October 15th-19th. One big part of digital citizenships is how we make relationships and communicate online. A great way to practice making safe digital relationships is by connecting online with other learners outside of your classroom. This week, the CISD Digital Learning Podcast episode is all about making classroom connections. During the episode my teammate, Trisha Goins, challenges listeners to complete a 6 step challenge. A great tool to help you complete the challenge steps is Flipgrid! Why Flipgrid?Flipgrid allows each of your learners a chance to share their learning through a video response on a topic. They can even do a little bit of app smashing and upload videos they have made in other apps to Flipgrid. Flipgrid connections are great because you can post your responses on your time and not have to worry about syncing up timezones or schedules. #GridPals
Flipgrid Explorer SeriesFlipgrid connects with experts who share their knowledge on topics in their field of work. They have worked with scientists, engineers, artists, and more! Each month, the featured explorer(s) create a series of launch-ready Disco Library topics for you to use. How you use the topics is completely up to you! To learn more about the Explorer Series you can go to the Disco Library on the teacher dashboard and search "flipgrid explorer series" or read page 17 in this Flipgrid eBook. Remember, elementary students are slowly learning about the world around them. They may not realize that a school across town is learning the same thing as them at the same time. Connections across the hall or across town are BIG connections to them. Using Flipgrid, you can start small and get more comfortable connecting with people outside of your classroom walls. Need help setting up your Flipgrid? Watch my Quick Win Video below! Happy connecting! 9/11/2018 0 Comments Jamboard

9/11/2018 0 Comments Working on WorkflowLast week in my first post of the year, We have iPads, Now what?, I included Digital Workflow as one of my 5 resources for 1:1 classrooms. Workflow can make or break a learning experience. It is no educator's dream to have a beautifully designed lesson stall because the learners are unable to show their thinking in an efficient way.
Tip 1 - The more you use your iPad as an educator, the easier it will be to help learners with their workflow. We as educators are blessed to be 2:1, with a Macbook and iPad, our learners are truly 1:1. It wasn't until I ditched my Macbook for a day that I realized how different a working experience was for our kids. I highly recommend using your iPad frequently to experience "the sharrow", working with multiple apps, and more. Tip 2 - Make a plan and test it before your lesson experience. Take time to model the workflow during the lesson. While this seems like it goes without saying, testing the workflow, putting it into small steps and modeling it can really help learners. Don't forget that our digital natives still need instruction on how to use our iPads for learning. They may not think about naming conventions, folders or the differences between saving to photos vs. an app. Here are a couple of guiding questions: Remember, your DLCs want to help you with this. Reach out to us and we can help design what will work best for your kids! 3 ways to model a workflow: Mirror your iPad screen by using Apple TV, Reflector or Interactive Board with Airplay. Place your iPad under your document camera (turn down the iPad brightness!) Pull a "tech-pert" group, model the workflow and let them teach their table. Tip 3 - There is no "perfect workflow". Be open to allowing learners "wiggle room" in the workflow when appropriate. What works for you may not always work for someone else and vice versa. It is about being comfortable and efficient in your work. Your kids will find shortcuts and differences in how they do things and that is OK. Let them help each other and you when it is appropriate. What are workflows that are working for you in your classroom? I'd love to read about them in the comments!

5/21/2018 0 Comments summer learning opportunitiesOne of my favorite things about learning is that it can happen any place at any time. That means that your summer professional learning can look however you design it. My team is offering several structured learning experiences this summer...some virtual, some face to face. Check out the graphic below to learn about what is available! If you are looking for other opportunities to learn this summer, check out this collection of summer learning throughout the DFW area that my teammate, Trisha Goins, curated. Whatever you choose to do, remember that the summer is a chance for you to rest and relax, and hopefully also allow you to enjoy a slower pace. I do my best learning when I am not stressed out and can do it on my own time. Have a great summer and happy learning! 4/27/2018 0 Comments top 5 Apple UpdatesDid you hear? Apple recently hosted a huge education event in Chicago rolling out many changes to its products and software apps that have the potential to impact education in a major way. There’s SO much good news from this event (including new devices priced for education!) that my friend Alli Pryor and I decided to break down some of our favorite updates for you vlog style in under 3 minutes! What devices do these work on? These awesome features work on any devices that run iOS 11. Don’t forget to keep your iOS updated and update your apps periodically to get the smoothest experience! Even if your learner devices are older, you as an educator can use the updates to explore, practice and create materials for your classroom - this is a great way to learn and explore so you are ready for when they do! Happy Learning! Megan and Alli |
