12/11/2017 0 Comments Going beyond the Hour of CodeThe week of December 4th was Computer Science Education Week. Learners across CISD were involved in #HourofCode experiences that allowed them to dig a little deeper into the world of computer programming through plugged (with technology) and unplugged (without technology) activities. The #HourofCode is a great way to get learners excited about computer science. If we use that excitement, and continue integrating coding into our curriculum, we can equip learners with the ability to identify problems and create solutions using computational thinking. Coding teaches thinking - you learn how to problem solve and to ask one of the most powerful questions in the learning process: "What is the next best solution?" Computational thinking builds neural pathways and can be applied to and connect all content areas. CISD provides integrated coding experiences through the Code2Learn initiative. We don’t just want our students to learn how to code, but we want them to code to learn. Learners will have the tools and skills required to create original computational artifacts to demonstrate their understanding in any content area. We are not asking educators to reinvent the wheel by developing new projects that use code. Instead, we want them to do what they do on a daily basis and infuse a coding element. If we consider the world that our learners live in and how it is constantly evolving, we owe it to our kids to provide them experiences that prepare them for a world that hasn’t been created yet.
