12/11/2017 0 Comments Going beyond the Hour of CodeThe week of December 4th was Computer Science Education Week. Learners across CISD were involved in #HourofCode experiences that allowed them to dig a little deeper into the world of computer programming through plugged (with technology) and unplugged (without technology) activities. The #HourofCode is a great way to get learners excited about computer science. If we use that excitement, and continue integrating coding into our curriculum, we can equip learners with the ability to identify problems and create solutions using computational thinking. Coding teaches thinking - you learn how to problem solve and to ask one of the most powerful questions in the learning process: "What is the next best solution?" Computational thinking builds neural pathways and can be applied to and connect all content areas. CISD provides integrated coding experiences through the Code2Learn initiative. We don’t just want our students to learn how to code, but we want them to code to learn. Learners will have the tools and skills required to create original computational artifacts to demonstrate their understanding in any content area. We are not asking educators to reinvent the wheel by developing new projects that use code. Instead, we want them to do what they do on a daily basis and infuse a coding element. If we consider the world that our learners live in and how it is constantly evolving, we owe it to our kids to provide them experiences that prepare them for a world that hasn’t been created yet.

We are looking forward to learning with you! Megan & The DLC Team 12/5/2017 0 Comments December Kindness ChallengeI am thrilled to get the chance to partner with Jan McBride, the counselor at Lakeside Elementary, to put new spin on Lakeside’s December Kindness Challenge. The holiday season is the perfect time to reinforce acts of kindness with learners. It is nice to get them looking past their wish lists and into helping others around them. The tallented 4th grade student council members kicked off the Kindness Challenge with this video: The learners at Lakeside have been asked to share their acts of kindness at home, at school, and in their community through Flipgrid. It is so exciting to hear about all of the kind acts taking place around us! Kids are raking leaves for the neighbors, picking up trash for others at lunch, settling arguments, helping out when someone is hurt, and much more! Check out all of the Random Acts of Kindness on Flipgrid until December 25th. Also, Let me know if you would like to incorporate Flipgrid into a lesson!
